Thoughts on the economy and more from Frank Schilling, the man who bet it all on the future prospects of the internet and developed key domain names into a nine-figure fortune.

.CO instead of .COM? I don't think so.

I can't picture this becoming big. Much like other, newer top level domains such as .me, there are two many hurdles to jump over to gain acceptance. I run a .me site and the biggest question I get is "There's a dot me?" Think of how hard it has been to get even a small percentage of people to understand that there's a .tv.

Bottom line for businesses and domain name investors alike: .com is going to stay the gold standard and the default "web address" in people's minds for years to come, at least in the English-speaking world.

World Cup domain name at auction this Wednesday

We know - you were thinking about the Olympics. However, there's a good domain name being auctioned off at Bido this coming Wednesday:

LaCopa2010.com.

For those of you who may be Hispanically-challenged, "la Copa" would be universally understood by Spanish-speakers to mean "The World Cup." Probably a lot of Italians - another soccer-loving race - would hear it that way, too, although some might spell it "coppa."

And, wonder of wonders, the quadrennial kick-apalooza that is the World Cup takes place in 2010 in South Africa. So this is a good name to develop and, especially if a Latin American team prevails, keep live well into the future.

Check out the auction page on Bido and get set up to bid at: http://www.bido.com/Auction?name=lacopa2010.com. Auction time is October 7, 4:00 pm EDT.
