Mark Steyn on the lesson of a Jewish cemetery

Another important piece from Steyn in which he explores the new (and completely politically acceptable) antisemitism which unites Leftists and Islamists. Such a union has real consequences which are already being played out every day.

"By 2005, there were fewer than 150 Jews in Tangiers, almost all of them very old. By 2015, it is estimated that there will be precisely none. Whenever I mention such statistics to people, the reaction is a shrug: why would Jews live in Morocco anyway? But in 1945 there were some 300,000 in this country. Today some 3,000 Jews remain—i.e., about one per cent of what was once a large and significant population. That would be an unusual demographic reconfiguration in most countries: imagine if Canada’s francophone population or Inuit population were today one per cent of what it was in 1945. But it’s not unusual for Jews. There are cemeteries like that on the rue du Portugal all over the world, places where once were Jews and now are none. I mentioned only last week that in the twenties, Baghdad was 40 per cent Jewish. But you could just as easily cite Czernowitz in the Bukovina, now part of Ukraine. “There is not a shop that has not a Jewish name painted above its windows,” wrote Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, visiting the city in 1937. Not today. As in Tangiers, the “community” resides in the cemetery."

Netanyahu quotes Bible to establish Israeli claim to Jerusalem

Israel's leader is quoting the Bible to stake claims on Jerusalem as being the nation's capital. Last week Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a parliamentary session commemorating Israel's capture of East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 war that "Jerusalem" and its alternative Hebrew name "Zion" appear 850 times in the Old Testament--Judaism's core canon. Citing such ancestry, Israel calls all of Jerusalem its "eternal and indivisible" capital -- a designation not recognized abroad, where many powers support Arab claims to East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Since the Western world no longer has even a basic education, it should surprise no one that this is actually news. What? Jews in Jerusalem?

More for the prophecy buffs...

All kinds of news of late concerning the burgeoning role of Turkey in the Middle East, as the Turkish government seeks to reestablish an Ottoman Empire of sorts, making peace in all different directions. Given that an older view of literal prophetic interpretation sees Turkey rather than Russia as being pivotal to the last days confederacy against Israel, I was amazed to see the following stories all hitting on the same day.

Important economic accords are being struck with Syria, Iraq, and Iran, and others in the region are being courted, even while Turkey snubs its somewhat friend, Israel.

Hmmm. I report, you... well, you know.

Temple Altar Construction Begins on Day of Destruction

Here's one for the prophecy buffs - the Temple Institute has begun construction of the altar for the future Temple, in Jericho. I read that it's being made of the smallest possible size so that it can be relocated to the Temple Mount more easily. The event took place on Tisha b'Av, the day when the Jews recall to mind the destruction of the first two Temples. While clothing and perhaps some pieces of furniture have been prepared for the Third Temple, to my knowledge this is the first time those involved have begun to make such a key component of the Temple sacrificial system.

Sanhedrin meets with Islamic leader Adnan Oktar (Harun Yahya)

The newly-reformed Jewish Sanhedrin has just met with the Turkish Islamic leader Adnan Oktar, better known as Harun Yahya. A statement of the Sanhedrin was released and can be read in English here.

So we now see influential Jews and Muslims discussing peace and the possible rebuilding of a Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount... witness the Sanhedrin's words:

Out of a sense of collective responsibility for world peace and for all humanity we have found it timely to call to the World and exclaim that there is a way out for all peoples. It is etched in a call to all humanity: We are all the sons of one father, the descendants of Adam, and all humanity is but a single family. Peace among Nations will be achieved through building the House of G-d, where all peoples will serve Him, pray to Him, and offer sacrifices according to the visions of the prophets, as foreseen by King Solomon in his prayers at the dedication of the First Holy Temple. Come let us love and respect one another, and love and honor and hold our heavenly Father in awe. Let us establish a house of prayer in His name in order to worship and serve Him together, for the sake of His great compassion. He surely does not want the blood of His creations spilled, but prefers love and peace among all mankind. We pray to the Almighty Creator, that you hearken to our Call. Together - each according to his or her ability - we shall work towards the building of the House of Prayer for All Nations on the Temple Mount in peace and mutual understanding.

Evidence of King David's palace found in Jerusalem.

Israel Finkelstein, chairman of Tel Aviv University's Department of Archaeology, began championing a theory several years ago that the biblical accounts of Jerusalem as the seat of a powerful, unified monarchy under the rule of David and Solomon are essentially false. The scientific methods for his assumptions, called a "lower dating" which essentially pushes archaeological evidence into a later century and thus erases all evidence of a Davidic monarchy, were laughed off by traditional archaeologists. But his book, The Bible Unearthed, wound up on the New York Times' best-seller list and he became the darling of a sympathetic media. He concluded that David and Solomon, if they existed at all, were merely "hill-country chieftains" and Jerusalem a poor, small tribal village. He claims that the myth of King David was the creation of a cult of priests trying to create for themselves a glorious history.

But the debunkers of Jewish biblical history got some bad news recently, when a spunky, dedicated archaeologist began her latest dig. Dr. Eilat Mazar, world authority on Jerusalem's past, has taken King David out of the pages of the Bible and put him back into living history. Mazar's latest excavation in the City of David, in the southern shadow of the Temple Mount, has shaken up the archaeological world. For lying undisturbed for over 3,000 years is a massive building which Mazar believes is King David's palace.

Israeli Sanhedrin Rabbi Calls For Turkish Mediation For Middle East Peace

Here's another one for the prophecy buffs. This is interesting for several different reasons, particularly:

(1) the rise of Turkey as peace broker in the Middle east;

(2) the Islamization of Turkey;

(3) the viewpoint of the Sanhedrin; and

(4) the mere fact of the renewed Sanhedrin's existence after 1600 years.

The recent spate of chatter concerning the Temple, the Ark, and Turkey is thought-provoking.

This news is slightly old (February 8 of this year), but while it featured prominently in Turkish newspapers, it has not been translated into English. But it is certainly important to take note of. Rabbi Menachem Fromen is one of the leaders of the new Israeli Sanhedrin.

Hurriyet: Israeli Rabbi Menachem Froman stated that the establishment of peace between Israel and Palestine was the problem most urgently in need of a solution in the Middle East and said: “It is an irrefutable fact that Turkey is the most natural mediator between Israel and Palestinian Society. Turkish President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Erdoğan are the only two who can bring regional peace about… There is a lack of trust and it is the Turkish government and Prime Minister Erdogan who will bring that trust about.”

Yet how often have I heard various prophecy commentators emphatically state that no Jew would ever trust a Muslim to mediate a regional Peace Treaty?

Ethiopian Orthodox Patriarch claims he will reveal Ark of the Covenant on June 26

A press conference is scheduled in Rome tomorrow... is this legitimate?

Abuna Pauolos, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, was in Rome this week to meet with Pope Benedict XVI. While there, he told reporters that the time had come to reveal before the world the Holy Ark. He said that the holy container has been in the custody of his church for hundreds of years.

Paulous said he would make the full announcement this Friday, June 26, 2 PM local time (3 PM Israel time, 8 AM New York time) at a press conference in Rome.

The claim that the Biblical Holy Ark has been kept at the Church, in the city of Axum, is an old one, but this is the first time that the Church plans to actually reveal the actual container, or news of it. It is not known whether the Church claims that the actual Tablets of the Law are inside it.

Copies of the alleged Ark are kept in many other churches in Ethiopia.

The news of the impending announcement was first reported by the Italian news agency Adnkronos. Pauolos told the news outlet, "Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that G-d delivered to Moses, and the center of searches and studies for centuries."

Pauolos said "The Ark of the Covenant has been in Ethiopia for many centuries. As Patriarch, I have seen it with my own eyes, and only a few, highly-qualified persons could do the same - until now."
